Last Day of Fake Blog

International Fake Journal Month with Roz Stendahl Zoey the sculptor from Zeattle April 30, 2017 8:36 AM

Well the week is over, I have to say it was quite an experience. Most of these postings were fast and slap dash. Keeping it quick and spontaneous has allowed me to come up with a new twist to my story line everyday. Also, I loved learning about a sculpture. My biggest frustration has been about finding ways to display the panels in quick succession. The blog format doesn't cut it. And it really fails big time on the phones. Happy will be the day when I can find a really comic flipping function. I am sure it is out there but I haven't figured it out yet.

My goals list?

1) Build a world by creating rooms for my characters, practice perspective.
2) Flesh out my characters. Same voice, outfit, hair style, and accessories.
3) Learn how to use gray ink wash and or cross hatch to enhance realism.
4) Create thumbnails first, instead of going with the first thing that comes to mind.
5) Tease out more details on the collage paper. Using either watercolor, watercolor pencils, charcoal or colored pens.
6) Continue to research and study of animals, history, geography etc.

What have I learned?

1) How to quickly take a line drawing and convert it into an electronic image. Hint: select the line, grow the selection by one or two pixels, fill with black, erase the back ground

2) How to draw in perspective. I read through a book about one, two and three point perspective and learned tons. The book I used was called "Perspective for comic book artists" by David Chelsea. I could reread it all over again and should.

3) I learned to let one day's entry dictate the next day's entry. And to just add details.

4) I learned to draw from memory instead of searching for source material.

5) I learned how much fun it was to work with such a supportive group of people.

Maria Semple

International Fake Journal Month with Roz Stendahl Zoey the sculptor from Zeattle April 28, 2017 10:27 AM

Maria showed me a photo taken from her iphone of her latest edition to the back yard garden. I completed this sculpture in December but it wasn't installed until last week. She was still trying to deal with her crazy neighbors who didn't appreciate her signage.

Getting Ready to Carve

I've got my carving tools out and will work on this wolf a bit more before this layer dries. Kitty Cat Carson is in the window watching our sun come out for a bit after a very very rainy April. Lama Linda is peering in because it is feeding time and I am still fussing here in the studio. As soon as I get the snout the way I want it, I am heading out doors for a break.

After using 10 gauge wire to form my wolf bones, I use Pal Tiya compound to build the first layer. After it dries, I will mold in some muscles and then end with the skin. To learn more about this cool material check out  www.paltiya.com

Placement

International Fake Journal Month with Roz Stendahl Zoey the sculptor from Zeattle April 20, 2017 7:42AM

I am trying to work out where to put my standing wolf.  So I brought over a huge swath of tracing paper to the site. I want him to be near his friend but also to stand alone so that kids can ride him. Tomorrow I will need to study every aspect of this wolf as I need it to be as accurate as possible.

Fenrir has arrived!

My latest installation has arrived on sight at Nordic Heritage Museum in Vallard, Washington! Fenrir, the wolf sits outdoors near the children’s play area. Fenrir is a wolf from the Norse Mythology . This was a challenge for me because it was created to sit on rocks while appearing whole.

To mold Fenrir I used “Pal Tiya” which is a compound meant for outdoor use. Here is their link http://www.paltiya.com/
It comes in powder and then all you need to do is mix water. The play dough like material is easy to carve and when you are finished it will dry like stone.

Tomorrow I start work on her mate. Who will stand tall next to her.

Safely delivered to the the Gill Bates Park in Wellingham, WA! The tire is cemented in place. A marble cap will be placed over it after the piece with the base is moved to ground and set in place. So now, I’m off to the woods for some rest.

Zoey:  Dan! You're a genius! I could use the tires to make a swivel stand for the antelopes!

Dan: But what about my tether ball court?

Zoey: Why you could build one with this spare, right after making us both some dinner.

Dan: hmmmm. You drive a hard bargin.

Zoey: Hi Dan

Dan: Hi Zoey

Zoey: Gill Bates just called to say he wants the antelope sculpture to swivel.

-->
And I don’t know how to do that. And then I’ve got these tires that I picked up on impulse at the junk yard yesterday. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Dan: You’ll think of something. Hey, Maybe you can build a tetherball court with the tires? Anyway, what’s for dinner?
