Introducing Becker

Dear Diary,

I saw Becker today as he is setting up his classroom at Lakewood Elementary for the start of school. He loves to search for the meaning of measurement.

He said “ A heart pretty much weighs  11 ounces

But how about the weight of my heart after hearing of the flood? About 71.4 pounds.”

Introducing Crystal!

Introducing Crystal. She is Zoeland's free spirit who run the Crystal Palace. A flower, bee and butterfly indoor garden. Crystal has asked me to make a sculpture of a butterfly for the front entrance. It's going to take a few weeks, but I'm on it!

Her favorite quote is

Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light

First Map

Zoey gets a map. This is a first map and I am working on a more complete version to be completed sometime in September. For my  60th Birthday Party present, I asked my family and friends to add themselves into Zoey's world by way of a character or place.  The new map will reflect these additions.

Do check out the Characters as they evolve on the page found in the tabs called Zoeland Characters.

Dear Diary 7-31-17

I love my life in Vernon Valley, although having stayed in my childhood home after my parents moved to Florida might just make me a FUDDY DUDDY! And my own regret is to have never married. I know my true love is out there SOMEWHERE but we just haven't met yet. In the meantime I follow my passion for art and sculpture. Making art is an obsession and full-time occupation. It all started with making mud pies in my back yard when I was 10 years old. I spend hours enjoying the feel of clay between my finger! As the cups came to life, so did I.

Generational Vision

Zoey's using sand pudding to finish her sculpture today. A method by Elder’s Jones http://www.sandpudding.com
She is so tickled that he is coming to the Party on Saturday!
The sculpture was inspired by Peter Donaldson and Son. Peter's son carries him on his shoulders in tribute of his turning 60.

Rock On

My life has gotten really hard lately and I find myself seeing no easy answers and not much I can do to change my situation. At least I have Zoey in my imagination to help me navigate a direction towards sanity.

Sky HIgh

Had a rough day yesterday. Good news is that the ice is melted. Bad news is that I am blown sky high!

Painting Murals

After a month of Sculpture, Zoey has moved on to murals. This one is for a wall in downtown Tacoma. Since we live on Commencement bay we have water and salmon, her hat is from Thai Pepper Restaurant, down the street, The colored lights are a nod at Corina's Bakery. The tall building is the old City Hall, the grill work from the upper left corner is from the new art store building on St. Helens called Artist and Craftsman Supply.   And the statue is the Goddess of Commerce found right around the art store.

Last Day of Fake Blog

International Fake Journal Month with Roz Stendahl Zoey the sculptor from Zeattle April 30, 2017 8:36 AM

Well the week is over, I have to say it was quite an experience. Most of these postings were fast and slap dash. Keeping it quick and spontaneous has allowed me to come up with a new twist to my story line everyday. Also, I loved learning about a sculpture. My biggest frustration has been about finding ways to display the panels in quick succession. The blog format doesn't cut it. And it really fails big time on the phones. Happy will be the day when I can find a really comic flipping function. I am sure it is out there but I haven't figured it out yet.

My goals list?

1) Build a world by creating rooms for my characters, practice perspective.
2) Flesh out my characters. Same voice, outfit, hair style, and accessories.
3) Learn how to use gray ink wash and or cross hatch to enhance realism.
4) Create thumbnails first, instead of going with the first thing that comes to mind.
5) Tease out more details on the collage paper. Using either watercolor, watercolor pencils, charcoal or colored pens.
6) Continue to research and study of animals, history, geography etc.

What have I learned?

1) How to quickly take a line drawing and convert it into an electronic image. Hint: select the line, grow the selection by one or two pixels, fill with black, erase the back ground

2) How to draw in perspective. I read through a book about one, two and three point perspective and learned tons. The book I used was called "Perspective for comic book artists" by David Chelsea. I could reread it all over again and should.

3) I learned to let one day's entry dictate the next day's entry. And to just add details.

4) I learned to draw from memory instead of searching for source material.

5) I learned how much fun it was to work with such a supportive group of people.

Maria Semple

International Fake Journal Month with Roz Stendahl Zoey the sculptor from Zeattle April 28, 2017 10:27 AM

Maria showed me a photo taken from her iphone of her latest edition to the back yard garden. I completed this sculpture in December but it wasn't installed until last week. She was still trying to deal with her crazy neighbors who didn't appreciate her signage.
